After reading this excellent position paper ‘Rethinking where and how we publish in health sciences’, there’s one quote that really stuck with me :
Each published article not only contributes to the advancement of knowledge but also, implicitly endorses the journal itself, along with its specific publishing model and the publishing group that owns it.
Butler & Boisgontier also suggested an ethical and pragmatic approach for choosing an academic journal in health domain:
- priority for journals with a diamond access publishing model or requiring only minimal Article Processing Charges (APCs)
- journals supported by national organizations covering the APCs on behalf of authors, paying them directly to for-profit publishers (ex. Sleep Science)
- journals with not-for-profit entities (e.g., PloS Climate).
- journals owned by for-profit publishers.

As (almost) senior researcher, I should follow this approach. It is not always easy. There are a long set of systemic, symbolic, and personal barriers (see this excellent article of Scholarly Kitchen on ethical /systemic issues associated with diamond publication model).

With this blog post, I list a set of journals with a diamond access publishing model for my current and future research projects. I focused on English publications. You can find other examples in French or Portuguese. It is not a complete list. You can find other journals on Scimago, DOAJ, Emarald,

It was challenging for (a DIY in R like) me. Consequently, I share my R code with fake data.
